چکیده

We report three new liquid crystal mixtures optimized for the phase modulator of an augmented reality display. The mixtures exhibit a relatively high birefringence (Δn) yet low viscosity, modest dielectric anisotropy (Δε), and acceptable resistivity and UV stability. High Δn enables a thin cell gap (d≈1.7 μm) for achieving 2π phase change with a reflective Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon (LCoS) device and ~2 ms average phase-to-phase response time at 40°C. The modest Δε helps lower the operation voltage to 5V. To improve the response time of a full-color LCoS, we propose a new driving method by shifting the operation voltage away from the threshold. We also applied such a high Δn LC mixture to LCoS based amplitude modulators and achieved submillisecond response time. Widespread applications of these materials for the emerging augmented reality displays are foreseeable. © 2017 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement OCIS codes: (070.6120) Spatial light modulators; (120.2040) Displays; (160.3710) Liquid crystals. Submillisecond-response nematic liquid crystals for augmented reality displays

We report a new nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixture with an ultra-low rotational viscosity (γ1 = 53.4 mPas @ 35°C), relatively high birefringence (Δn ≈0.15), and moderate dielectric anisotropy (Δε = −2.80 @ 35°C). When employed in a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) projector with RGB light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a sub-millisecond response time is obtained without the need for complicated overd...

Fast-response switchable lens for 3D and wearable displays.

We report a switchable lens in which a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal cell is utilized to control the input polarization. Different polarization state leads to different path length in the proposed optical system, which in turn results in different focal length. This type of switchable lens has advantages in fast response time, low operation voltage, and inherently lower chromatic aberrati...

Beam steering for virtual/augmented reality displays with a cycloidal diffractive waveplate.

We proposed a switchable beam steering device with cycloidal diffractive waveplate (CDW) for eye tracking in a virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) display system. Such a CDW diffracts the incident circularly polarized light to the first order with over 95% efficiency. To convert the input linearly polarized light to right-handed or left-handed circular polarization, we developed a br...

Submillisecond-response polymer network liquid crystal phase modulators at 1.06-lm wavelength

A fast-response and scattering-free polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC) light modulator is demonstrated at k1⁄4 1.06 lm wavelength. A decay time of 117 ls for 2p phase modulation is obtained at 70 C, which is 650 faster than that of the host nematic LCs. The major tradeoff is the increased operating voltage. Potential applications include spatial light modulators and adaptive optics. VC 2011 ...

Fast-Response Infrared Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Phase Modulators

A high speed phase modulator based on ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) is demonstrated. For uniform alignment and pure phase modulation, we propose a new FLC device using a short helical pitch material in a homeotropic alignment. This device is driven by periodic in-plane electrode stripes implemented on the surface of both cell substrates. As a result, we have obtained a large phase modulati...
